African Wild Dogs

15 May 2020

Seeing and photographing these endangered African wild dogs or painted wolves (Lycaon pictus) was a very special experience.

We had had a report that a pack had disappeared into the bushes by a dry waterhole in the morning. On the assumption that they would sleep during the day, we went back to the dry waterhole in the late afternoon. After spending an hour staring at an empty dry waterhole and seeing absolutely nothing, all of a sudden the pack appeared and started bonding with each other all around us before they set off hunting.
